Many of the subjects for James Maladys paintings come from his Irish heritage and visits to Ireland. The Pennsylvania watercolorist makes frequent trips to Ireland to nourish his soul and quench his thirst.
His detailed illustrations of Irish people in Irish pub scenes sharing conversation and a pint of Guinness convey a charm and sincerity that could only be the work of a brush held by a true Irishman. He likes to get to know his subjects, therefore each painting requires a great deal of research. With a grin, he says it may take up to sixteen pints of research in some cases! In fact, he has included Guinness beer in so many of his paintings that the company and he now exchange friendly letters.
Born in 1937, Malady worked as a commercial artist until the 1980s. Deciding to paint full time was a major turning point in his life. "I am doing exactly what I want and making a good living at it" he quotes. His father was a professional ballroom dancer and prize fight manager. Malady was also featured in the Rockport publication "The 100 Best Watercolors" and has won numerous awards for his paintings. The artist studied under Francis Criss at the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan where he also filled in as a substitute teacher.
